This past Sunday, Fox premiered a special, live remake of the hit movie “Grease”. The original “Grease” was released June 1, 1978. It was directed by Randall Kleiser. This production earned $387,513,770! It starred John Travolta, as the heart-throb of the movie, who played Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John, as the new girl, Sandy Olsson. Together they create the timeless love story.

Compared to the classic movie, the remake has some differences. The biggest difference being that “Grease: Live!” was not released in theaters. Instead it was premiered on Fox. Tickets were able to be purchased, and the select few had the opportunity to see it live at Warner Brothers Studio on January 31, 2016. The splendid three-hour production drew in an average of 12.2 million viewers!

Another obvious difference is they casted different actors. Seeing there is a 38 year difference between the two productions, the performance needed some fresh faces! Replacing John Travolta, as the greaser Danny Zuko, is Aaron Tveit. Another newcomer, playing Sandy Olsson, is Julianne Hough. There are also some popular people that the youth of today may recognize such as, KeKe Palmer playing Marty Maraschino, Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchy,  Carlos PenaVega as Kenickie, and Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo. Another addition to the new crew is the new funk-pop band, DNCE, whose lead man is Joe Jonas. DNCE played Johnny Casino and the Gambler’s.

“Grease: Live!” was phenomenal, it was very popular amongst the students of San Clemente High School. Junior Lily Brown said, “Vanessa Hudgens was amazing. Her father died hours before the live performance, and she still performed. She never broke character which amazed me. I can’t stop listening to the album. They made the performance identical to the movie. I couldn’t stop screaming.”

A fellow SCHS junior, Emily Glaser, enthused, “Grease: Live! was the most impressive and amazing live show I have seen in my whole life. The actors were perfect for their roles and the set and incorporation of the audience was so cool.”

It is evident that “Grease: Live!” was a successful production filled with incredible and talented actors and performers. It was impressive to see such triumphant artistic abilities all on one stage, in one studio. Hopefully FOX will produce another live performance as victorious as “Grease: Live!”
