Whether you’re looking for a savory croissant, a sweet maple bar, or a morning coffee, Surfin’ Donuts Coffee House has it all. Their wide selection, along with high ratings, makes this donut shop an extremely popular and well-liked location. Although the voting results were close, Surfin’ Donuts narrowly beat Rose Donut & Cafe for the title of the best donuts in San Clemente.
The location (1822 S El Camino Real) being right off the freeway and decently close to the beach attracts many customers, resulting in an often packed store. The pleasant flavors of the glazes and fillings, the fluffiness of the donuts, and the freshness of all of the baked goods add to this popularity.
Even though different people enjoy a variety of items, the cinnamon twists, maple bars, ham and cheese croissants, and fresh-squeezed orange juice seem to be some of their most popular items. Senior Savannah Batchelor’s usual order consists of a cinnamon twist with a glass of orange juice on the side.
“The cinnamon twist donut is definitely the best cinnamon twist I’ve ever had. The donut itself is light and airy, and the cinnamon flavor has a perfect sweetness and the proper amount of cinnamon. The orange juice is so fresh and has just the right amount of pulp,” Batchelor said.
Not only is Surfin’ Donuts popular with San Clemente residents, but it is also well known by people from all over the country. Nieve Courtney, a senior who moved to San Clemente from Utah, knew what was important to take with her when returning to her hometown. “Instead of bringing my normal carry-on bag, I brought a box of [Surfin’]donuts on the airplane home so that I could give them to my coach,” Courtney shared.
Her coach, once a San Clemente resident himself, still holds the opinion that Surfin’ Donuts has the best donuts, and requested that Courtney bring him a box of his favorite picks. We agree that Surfin’ is worth it.
