As another year begins, so does the season in which everyone’s favorite, and definitely not at all rigged,  award show occurs, the Grammys. And, per usual, there certainly was no shortage of drama.

Even before the award portion started, controversy arose with Kanye West and his new wife, Bianca Censori. While posing on the red carpet, Bianca turned so that her back was facing the paparazzi, and slowly lowered her black fluffy robe which had been covering her up until that point. She was found to be wearing a completely see-through mini dress, which left people at home stunned by the blurred body on their TV screens. Following this, Kayne and his wife went home without ever even attending the actual Grammys. While many originally speculated that they were kicked out for the so-called stunt, it was later revealed that there had actually never even been seats available for them.

While the actual award portion was off to a strong start with Doechii winning Best Rap Album of the year and becoming the third woman to ever do so in the 67 years of Grammys, and later Chappell Roan winning Best New Artist, many of the other selections have been largely debated online; the most heated conversation right now being Beyoncé winning both Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year. San Clemente High School junior Chloe Chafin commented on her specifically winning the best country album, claiming that “the album was more pop than country” and that “Chris Stapleton and Post Malone had way better albums.” Most online agreed with the sentiment, some even comparing the statistics Beyoncé’s winning album, Cowboy Carter, to the other nominations, with the album falling far short in streams of albums like Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poet’s Department. Still, some felt that Beyoncé had been robbed in the past, and deserved this album for the previous times she should have one.

The general opinion online is that Billie Eilish should have won Album of the Year, or at least one of her seven nominations. Junior Sophia Howard felt as though “Billie was robbed and deserved to win something.” She also brought up the controversy of whether it was even appropriate to hold the Grammys this year with the fires occurring in LA. She thought it “was great how they were trying to raise money for the fires, but that the way they asked for money before and after every ad break was a little much and felt shallow seeing as the room was full of billionaires.”

Despite the messy parts, the Grammys still had good moments, such as those mentioned with Doechii and Chappell Roan, and also with Sabrina Carpenter winning Best Pop Vocal Album. Even though it reminded many of the more conceited or unfair aspects of Hollywood, the political activism and what many considered to be fair wins sparked hope in viewers’ hearts.
