Nestled in a grassy expanse inside a Talega neighborhood, Tierra Grande, or Barn Park would be difficult to discover if you did not have prior knowledge of its existence. Yet within this niche lies a place that longtime residents cherish, where local kids have spent many hours running around and making friends.
Yet a feature that goes flying under the radar is the basketball court, which is easily the nicest in the area. “Barn Park is definitely the most underrated basketball court in San Clemente,” senior Daniel Lo said. “There are multiple hoops so you always have a place to play, the lights are awesome and make the atmosphere feel like a professional game, and the rims and backboards are top-notch. It’s the best place to hoop at.”
All kinds of people find themselves playing pickup, too. From middle-aged people seeking relief from the stress of their day to shoot around to young children learning to love the sport, to skilled ballers hosting high octane games, this court is loved by everyone. Though the occasional loose ball jumping into the swampy gutter or careening down the hill can elicit groans of frustration, the location is perfect for seasoned veterans and newbies alike.
“There is no sound more satisfying than the ball swishing through those high-quality nets,” Lo added. “No matter how stressful or tough the day was, playing pickup always alleviates my mind. It’s my happy place.”
