Often when people think about sustainable clothing, the cost is the first thing that comes to mind. Believe it or not, people can shop sustainably, cheaply, and easily in person or online.
If you aren’t sure what it means to shop sustainably, do not worry. Many people today tend not to understand the concept fully. Sopping sustainability means you are not spending money on fast fashion clothing; read the article “Are Influencers unintentionally promoting global pollution?” to mind more information on fast fashion. The whole point of shopping sustainably is to stop giving money to harmful billion-dollar companies.
One easy cheap way someone could shop sustainably is through thrifting. “I like thrifting because it’s like a scavenger hunt, you never know what piece you will come across,” an SCHS junior stated. Recycled clothing is beneficial to the environment and community. Clothes can be found ranging anywhere from one to ten dollars. Not all clothes you buy thrifting will be great, but it is worth the trip to your local thrift store because the possibilities of what you find are endless.
Thrift stores are usually found in almost every town, but if there is no one nearby, shopping on the second-hand market online is another option. With shopping online, shipping costs now enter the picture, but the price still does not compare to the amount of money you can spend at department and boutique stores that are also sustainable. Online stores like Depop, Poshmark, and even eBay are where you can buy sustainable clothing without breaking the bank.
With the growing popularity of fast fashion, shopping sustainably is something that our generation should start normalizing. With all the possible ways to shop sustainably in person and online, that does not include spending much money; there shouldn’t be a reason why people are not able to.
