As a society, as humans, we’ve always looked to the future and racked our brains as to what advancements in technology, healthcare, or impossibilities may become possible if just given enough time. Well, the first in a long list is upon us, open Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically, ChatGPT.

The free to use AI bot was released last week and has since gained one million users. To put that into perspective, it took Instagram 2 months and Facebook 10 months to reach a million users, ChatGPT did it in 5 days.

So what makes this dialogue oriented question and answer software so important?

Senior Christian McCleary said, “The potential of ChatGPT is infinite. It can summarize, analyze, and respond in a human-like manner that previous AI could not. It’s just about asking the right questions.”

ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize the way that education is delivered. By providing an AI-driven interface to enable students to ask questions and receive real-time answers, it can help students to better understand concepts and increase engagement with course material. By providing an AI-driven tutor, it can also supplement traditional teaching methods, allowing teachers to focus more on individualized instruction and personalized learning. Additionally, ChatGPT can provide a more efficient way to assess student understanding and identify areas that need further instruction.

Senior Kian Jadbabaei said, “I think ChatGPT has many positives and has autocorrection systems to prevent people from using the AI with malicious intent. However, I think the ease of asking it to complete any tasks from writing code to lyrics of songs could take away from the creativity needed to accomplish these tasks. The fear is that we humans become so dependent on AI that we lose all sense of doing anything manually, which would place us in an entirely machine-made world; arguably most people would not opt-in for living in this world.”

While there are some negative aspects of ChatGPT and open AI overall, it should always be treated as a tool used in arriving at an answer, not just simply the answer. It’s exciting to ponder how much AI will improve in the coming years, especially considering that ChatGPT is just a building block and a prototype.
