Although recent years have not been entirely kind to the continuing history of film, 2023’s Oscar nominations present us with the most beautiful and exciting collection of movies that we’ve seen in a very long time. With a whopping 11 nominations, the sci-fi film, Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the group as the highest critically acclaimed film of the past year.
This film is a leader among many other notable works, including The Whale, The Banshees of Inisherin, All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: the Way of the Water, Elvis, and Top Gun: Maverick.
This year was filled with various films that have lifted our hopes for the coming years of filmmaking, starring comeback actors like Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan. Among many highly regarded performances, audiences root for Brad Pitt in Babylon, Viola Davis in The Woman King, Danielle Deadwyler in Till, Cate Blanchett in Tár, Ana De Armas in Blonde, Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Austin Butler as Elvis, and Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie.
This year’s Academy Awards returns with a range of comeback, returning, and newcomer actors, actresses, and directors. Expected to be hosted again by Jimmy Kimmel, we can hope for a successful revival of the annual ceremony—hopefully without any Spiderman costumes or slaps of any kind.
“I’m excited for the Oscars,” said senior Caitlyn Lambert. “I love watching them and I love seeing the people being celebrated and how happy everybody gets to receive their award.”
Expected to take place on March 12th at 5:00 pm PDT, audiences are highly anticipating a show that can perfectly wrap up the last year by celebrating the films that filled theaters for the first time since COVID-19.
“I don’t usually watch the Oscars, but I always like to read about the results,” says sophomore Devon Harris. “I’m rooting for the kid from Indiana Jones. He just won a Golden Globe for Everything Everywhere All at Once and I hope he gets the Oscar since this is his first film in thirty years.”
