On February 23rd, the third season of Outer Banks was released to the public. Teens, adults, and anyone else with a Netflix membership flooded to Netflix to indulge in escapist teen drama and intrigue.
The show centers around a group of friends, John B, Pope, JJ, Kiara, and Sarah who live in a bitterly divided small beach town of rich and pretentious kooks and poor and adventurous pogues. These teens with seemingly nothing to lose, go on ultimate adventures in search of treasure, romance, and action. The show is comparative to Romeo and Juliet but with an Indiana Jones twist.
The third season is no different than its predecessors, the stakes are even higher. The show expands settings as the characters take their adventures to Barbados. The twists and turns of this new season will have you on the edge of your seat and clicking the Netflix continue watching button. New romance, dangerous threats, exotic locations, and fantastic treasure hunts all make season three a must-watch.
The success of this show is no shocker. #OBX3, (abbreviation for Outer Banks season three) is at 2.6 billion views on Tiktok and the show has only been available for streaming for a week. Additionally, the show has been in Netflix’s list of top 10 TV shows in the US Today and is the reigning number 1 and is anticipated to stay there for much longer.
Why is this teen drama so astronomically successful?
The first season was released in mid April in 2020. Schools were in lock down due to the pandemic. COVID-19 was spreading rapidly and teens were missing out on one right-of-passage and social experience after another. Outer Banks became adventure and freedom in isolation and lockdown. Recklessness while everyone was forced to be cautious. It was a breath of fresh air in a seemingly suffocating environment. Teens could live vicariously through these characters. OBX will always be looked upon fondly by this generation, no doubt.
Though the third season has been massively popular, the first two seasons of Outer Banks are treasured by many viewers. Some feel unnecessary changes were made in the new season.
“The writers are shifting the plot so it is mostly killing people, violence, and treasure hunts, instead of focusing on a fun teenage summer. It is still entertaining and I really liked it, but I wish it was more realistic and fun.” Junior Erin Reyland said about that season’s new direction.
Junior Lea Davis additionally gives her take, “My favorite seasons will always be the first two, but I really enjoyed and loved season three.”
If you want a taste of summer and adventure and you’re tired of these long and cold winter months, stream the new season of Outer Banks!
