Within an avant-garde society, dominated by the constant development of cutting-edge technology, it is hard to imagine that anyone would stand ignorant of the new advancements technology has to offer these days. However, a growing number of people have since turned their backs on modern technology’s revolutions, particularly under the subject of its upcoming automobiles. In turn, a surprising trend stands on the horizon: more people are falling in love with classic cars.

As a matter of fact, our own San Clemente High School is currently taking on this change. With an unmistakable presence, the classics aren’t hard to miss when pulling up to school. But what’s behind this enthusiastic revival of the classic car?

From the hands-on craftsmanship to the nostalgic roar of their engines, these timeless automobiles are growing in demand among young adults who crave originality and wish for a trip back into the past.

What was once socially accepted as a rather quaint, grandpa’s hobby, the possession of a vintage set of wheels is now becoming the hottest thing on campus, giving teens a new way to express themselves and stand out.

San Clemente’s automotive class appreciates all forms of cars, especially that of a vintage classic. Sophomore student, Addie Kipper is enrolled in the auto class, and she, like many others, has also developed a deep appreciation for the timeless classics. Even after working on many cars from every decade, Addie still claims that the classics are her “all-time favorite.” Addie specifically values the physical diversity among vintage cars. She points out that “no two classic cars are alike. These days every car looks boring and isn’t colorful.” Kipper continues to criticize the cars of today by alluding to that of “a copy and paste.”

Addie’s powerful remarks are relevant when examining cars from eras such as the 60s or 70s. For instance, take a look at a ’63 23-window VW bus, or a ’68 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The difference is night and day. With each vehicle offering its own unique and interesting style, the roads of the 50s, 60s, and 70s displayed significantly more diversity and amusement. In complete contrast, the modern car design, that dominates the road today, conveys more monotonous and dull themes, managing to display but a few subtle differences between each model.

Moreover, the aesthetic and physical appearance also play a significant role in a classic car’s charm. Teens have embraced the look of the classic design as a way to stand out on the road. With their unique structure, bold colors, and rumbling motor, the classics supply their owner with a greater level of character and respect that far surpasses the uniform-like style of today’s automobiles.

The attendance at the Cars and Coffee car show held on Saturday morning at the San Clemente Outlets proves that there is a significant interest in the classic car, as well as the more modern, up-to-date vehicles. Liam Adkins, a 17-year-old student and proud owner of a ’68 Chevrolet Camaro, makes the Cars and Coffee car meet a priority on his weekly schedule. Often accompanied by his dad, Adkins claims that “Cars and Coffee is a great opportunity for a father and son bonding time. And since my dad likes working on cars too, I can rely on him to help buy new parts, so it all works out.” Adkins and his dad’s shared passion for the classics just goes to show the love for vintage vehicles has stayed consistent after all these years.

San Clemente High School’s homecoming parade additionally serves as a keen example of which vintage cars are admired and celebrated. The parade held on Del Mar makes use of various classic cars for display. Alongside the many extravagant floats, retro vehicles can be seen slowly making their way down the parade line carrying the high school’s sports teams. The classic car’s presence contributes to the homecoming parade’s visual appeal and aesthetic, ultimately serving as an alluring decoration.

In all, the comeback of vintage vehicles is undeniable. In a world where convenience and innovation are frequently in demand, the embracement of old-aged, classic cars can be seen as a well-needed refreshment of the continuously advancing society the new generation beholds. For young people, these automobiles serve more than just a method of transportation; they symbolize a nostalgic connection to the past, an authentic and genuine feel, and an opportunity for self-expression. As retro vehicles’ presence on the road continues to grow, it is safe to say that classic cars are here to stay.
