As the Triton girls tennis team reaches the halfway point of the season, the energy and camaraderie among them is stronger than ever. With a dynamic mix of veteran leadership combined with emerging talent, this year’s team is primed to build off the momentum from last season where they reached the semifinals and pulled off a huge upset run. Led by senior captains, Abby Allen, Natalie Riley, Lucy Manning, and Coco Bush, the Tritons have high hopes for the remainder of the season.
The Lady Tritons have done well under the veteran leadership that they have. Junior Kylie Budge has five years of playing experience and works to pump up her teammates before every game. “I hope to bring spirits up when they’re down and play the best I can to help the team,” she said. Coco, a senior, wants the team to be highly unified and have fun together. They strive to create an atmosphere where everyone lifts each other up and is encouraging.
With emerging talent, such as freshman Emily Ding, alongside seasoned players, the Tritons benefit from a balance of experience and youthful energy, which Coco believes strengthens the team’s dynamic.
Team bonding is key to the Tritons’ success. From sleepovers and social functions that build camaraderie to tradition-building habits such as constant court-side encouragement, a positive team culture has been fostered. “Everyone is constantly encouraging each other so no one loses hope,” Emily says. Above all, sportsmanship and positivity are core values with players always cheering for one another.
The Tritons are swift and witty players who can adapt to any situation. Kylie commented, “If the other team hits harder, we don’t slam it back but try to keep it in.” There is a balance between patience and aggressive play as they wait for when an advantage opens up. Emily explained that while every player brings her own style to the court, consistency and determination are common elements of the group.
This season, the Tritons’ roster showcases a solid mix of veterans and newcomers. Returning seniors, such as Abby Allen and Natalie Riley, bring experience to the team, while standout Jayde Banks has risen to take a key position. Coco highlights the importance of this blend, saying, “Our team this year has a lot of talented younger players.” With Emily Ding making an immediate impact as a freshman starter, the Tritons’ depth allows them a chance to go toe-to-toe with some of the tougher opponents.
The Tritons are preparing for key matchups against rivals San Juan and Aliso Niguel, two of the best teams in their league. Last season’s semifinal run, where they exceeded expectations, gives them confidence for another strong playoff push. “We had so much fun during the season, and we beat a lot of teams we were supposed to lose to,” recalls Coco, highlighting the team’s underdog mentality.
Led by longtime head coach Gary, the team also sees valuable mentorship from a dedicated coaching staff. This is complemented by former Triton players, who return during summer and holiday breaks to provide added insight and guidance. On and off the court, the Tritons are well-prepared.
The Tritons are hopeful for this year’s playoff run. Coco, being in her last year, wants to make this one count. “I hope we do really well this year and make it far,” she said, hoping to leave a lasting impact while helping her team grow. With strong leadership, depth, and a unified team spirit, the Tritons are prepared to leave their mark again.
