Coming off of a close 35-28 win at home against Chino Hills on Friday night, the San Clemente High School football team improved to 3-2 overall.
The big win against the Huskies on homecoming night was thanks to a three-touchdown performance from senior running back Colin Kohl, and, on the other side of the ball, fellow senior Kayden Raymond who chipped in a team-high 14 total tackles. Raymond now leads the Tritons in tackles on the season with 42.
Another senior leader, Lee Puka Fuimano, is second on the team in total tackles (36), but also contributes on offense, with 164 all-purpose yards. Puka attributes his and the team’s success to having an “off and on the field bond” because they “play together as a team.”
Although Triton Football has seen success, these next few weeks will need to be filled with a lot of good reps as well as strategic game planning, especially for this Friday’s game. “Looking into this next week against Murrieta Valley,” wide receiver and safety sophomore Jaxon Rex said, “We are preparing for their strong run game and staying disciplined, not letting up big plays, and playing smart as a team for us to win.”
With only five teams remaining on the Tritons’ schedule, the team’s playoff hopes remain uncertain. Their next games include Murrieta Valley, Coronado, Mission Viejo, Los Alamitos, and our final game at home against Edison.
Looking at those games, Puka feels confident because the team will “continue to hold each other to a higher standard so there can be exponential growth for greatness.” The football season ahead looks bright for our San Clemente Tritons and SCHS is excited to have more memorable Friday nights.
Be sure to catch the Tritons in the next game, on the road, at Murrieta Valley this Friday at 7:00 PM. For tickets, please visit this link!
