San Clemente High School’s after-school Drama Department premieres its rendition of Guys and Dolls next Thursday, November 7th at 7 pm in the Triton Center. This 1950s musical filled with romance and high-stakes gambling will take you to New York. Following the story of horse runner Nathan Detroit, played by senior Dylan Johnson, in his desperate search for a venue to hold his infamous crap game. As he calls up risky Sky Masterson, played by senior Will Turner, for help, the two men form a bet that leads both to realize that when it comes to “dolls,” their dice do not always roll the way they expect.
Since the beginning of the school year, the cast and crew have dedicated countless hours to pull this show off. With the help of director Kirsti McCleary, music instructor Alex Ustich, and choreographer Susanna Vaughan, Guys and Dolls has come together perfectly. Junior Halle Browning, who portrays a hot box dancer, describes “Guys and Dolls as a high-energy show filled with love, exciting dance numbers, and complex harmonies.” Browning claims that despite the demanding rehearsals, the show has become “something [she] is very proud of” and “wishes to share [her] love of the show with everyone.” Ingersoll invites everyone to experience the vibrant energy and passion the cast has poured into the show. With their countless hours of hard work, the cast has truly made Guys and Dolls an exceptional production that you will not want to miss!
However, without the talented crew, the show would not exhibit the same level of sophistication. With heavy reliance on the multiple different crews, they help to polish and bring together every aspect of the show. Costumes co-lead and junior Kai Wells describes the “very hands-on tasks” of being on a crew, including “picking out costumes, altering them, and helping actors quickly change between scenes.” Wells explains how “it’s such a fulfilling experience to see all of the crew’s hard work and dedication on stage.”
If you are looking for a fun evening festivity, Junior Sydney Ingersoll, who portrays Arveena Abernathy, invites you to “take a gamble and come see Guys and Dolls,“ promising that this classic musical comedy with its “Happy Ending” will leave you laughing and carrying the show’s joy through the night. Director Kirsti McCleary adds that “everyone should come see this musical theater classic to see these amazing SCHS students sing, act, and dance their hearts out,” making it a performance you would not want to miss. Tickets for the musical are sold on SCHSDrama.com or before the show in front of the Triton Center. Do not forget to mark your calendars to see SCHS Drama’s production of Guys and Dolls performed November 7th-8th and 14th-16th at 7 p.m. in the Triton Center!
