On December 3rd and 4th, both soccer programs at SCHS kicked off their season with home opener games, the girls against Foothill High School and the boys against Orange Lutheran. Both teams were victorious, finishing with the same exact score of 5-3 in two suspenseful 80 minute matches.
The two teams both have a respectable history of performing well throughout almost every winter season, winning the majority of their matches with unwavering support from the community. This game showcased nothing different, as each team brought out a notable crowd of spectators for their first games of the season, filling the stands with supportive families and friends to cheer on the team. To show support for one another, the boys attended the girls game on Tuesday, and the girls returned the support by attending their game on Wednesday.
With senior captains Camille Brophy and Taylor Hernandez taking charge, the girls team played with grit and heart for all eighty minutes of the game, showcasing immense teamwork and determination. A back and forth score with header goals, flashy foot skills, and successful set plays provided a rollercoaster of emotion and suspense all game long. Not only was the play on the field noteworthy, but the cheering and energy from the bench (or the 12th man) carried the game home. Every player, whether on or off the field, gave everything they had in whatever way they could, resulting in the victory. Head Coach Jennie Mann explained that “Foothill was a tough opponent with strong, physical players. [She is] proud of our team for their determination and resiliency,” and is looking forward to a great season ahead after such a successful home opener.
Similarly, the boys team played an exceptional match against Orange Lutheran, with strong finishes and physical play. Like the girls, the score bounced back and forth in a high scoring match. Going into the final two minutes, the score remained 4-3, just one goal off of what the girls had accomplished. With a striking finish, junior Jonathan Gutowski put away the final and fifth goal for SCHS, the crowd erupting with applause, surprised at the identical scores between the two matches. Not only was the score the same, but junior at SC Kelman Embargary notes that “they both played as a team really well and that’s what led to the victory.”
Every player was exceptional, showcasing the immense talent and hard work that makes up SCHS. Both teams continue to look forward to another amazing season for each program, hoping to bring home many more wins. Congratulations on a successful start to the season and cheers to many more victories!
