Surfing did not become an official Olympic sport until 2020, with the Tokyo games being the sport’s initial debut. The 2028 Olympics are going to be held in Los Angeles. This is because the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2024 games to Paris, and, as it was a dual award, the 2028 games will be hosted in LA. This will be the third time that Los Angeles has hosted the Olympics, as we also held it here in 1932 and 1984. The games are an incredibly expensive matter for a town to host. The LA28, a private non-profit company organizing the 2028 Games, has a $6.9 billion budget funded by corporate sponsorships and a significant contribution from the International Olympic Committee. All of this preparation begins years before the games are set to begin.

Trestles, lower Trestles more specifically, has been a famous surf spot for many years, even earning a lyric in the Beach Boys’ hit, “Surfin’ USA.” The surf spot sits on the land of the Marine Corps’ Camp Pendleton, but California has leased out the park for many years now. As a result of this, the World Surf League, which has held many of its contests at Trestles, submitted a bid to host the Olympics to take the stress off of the state park. The state has not yet responded to this generous offer. However, many locals of San Clemente are hopeful they will take this offer. SCHS junior Margot Lee stated that “it’s very exciting to have the Olympics right in our backyard.”
While hosting the Olympics is a very large task to take on for a city, the games usually end up bringing up the economy in the host cities. The Olympics are a very coveted form of entertainment, and, as a result, many people from all over the world spend large amounts of money to be able to have a seat in the arena. Also, as the games are televised, millions of people will be watching San Clemente aside Los Angeles, causing an increase in the potential interest to buy homes in southern California.
