Across recent years, distinct colors have reflected the seasons they trended in. This has been especially apparent this year. A joyous and refreshing color coined “butter yellow” dominated fashion trends this past summer. Andrea Trejo, a sophomore here at SCHS, described it as “a huge craze.” But as fall begins and the weather cools, a new color is stepping in. Deep and comforting, burgundy has emerged as the clear “fall color” among teenagers and young adults on social media. These trendy, seasonal colors are often worn to accentuate the mood, feel, and spirit of each season.
Linda Cui Zhang, Associate Fashion Director at Nordstrom, said, “As we welcome a lighter, softer palette to our wardrobes for [summer], buttery yellows bring a sunny warmth to outfits.” Butter yellow was a hit because it just worked. The color was light, cheerful, and, most importantly fit the sunny energy that many love. Naturally, our warm, bright San Clemente climate encourages the popularity of butter yellow. Camilia Elkoustaf, a sophomore at SCHS, said, “It is a very big color, [and I think that] everyone is going to continue wearing their butter yellow clothes for a while.”

Although fall usually marks a seasonal drop in temperature, that cannot be said for San Clemente. Here, warm temperatures often last into late October, allowing residents to savor the butter yellow vibe a little longer.
However, our short thermometer leaves some residents yearning for the “fall aesthetic.” “Burgundy just is fall—it’s just so cozy,” said SCHS sophomore Andrea Trejo. “I wish we could experience it more here,” she added. With our lack of seasonal coziness, San Clemente teens and young adults have begun to wear burgundy in order to bring out the fall spirit. This influx is especially noticeable on campus.
Although it may seem like these trending seasonal colors are just a result of TikTok influence, it’s important to remember that these changes routinely reflect the mood and overall feeling of the season. The emergence of burgundy at our school proves that people in our town desire the seasonal changes we lack, the changes which have been glorified by social media.
