The world felt quiet after last Saturday, October 11th, Hollywood icon Diane Keaton passed away in her Los Angeles home at age 79. Her family is asking for privacy during this time of mourning. Upon learning of Keaton’s passing, those she inspired, worked with, and loved felt a hole in her absence. Across social media peoples feed were flooded with words of remembrance to the actress and her marvelous life.
Keaton’s career is immortalized in more than 50 years of films, books, and fashion that are widely recognized and celebrated. Through her creative freedom, Keaton’s career encapsulated her fun, courageous, and whimsical personality.

The woman who made eccentricity iconic and instilled her own style in her own right leaves a reigning legacy. Keaton didn’t strive to ‘fit in’ and follow trends, she reinvented confidence and authenticity. Among those who were surprised and heartbroken to learn of Keaton’s passing was SCHS teacher Ms. Shick. Shick remembered Keaton’s style as “classic and conservative,” with big suits, jewelry, and hats it became her trademark. Keaton didn’t seek to limit herself and her style reflected that as Shick remarked, “It was distinct, she knew who she was and what she liked, and didn’t try to be a Hollywood bombshell.”
Through her individuality and the warmth of her personality, Keaton lit up peoples screens in her films. Keaton starred in many iconic films including The Godfather, Annie Hall, and Something’s Gotta Give, to name a few. Senior at SCHS, Sienna Stone commented on Keaton’s career claiming “she was a prominent actress in the film industry and amazingly talented.” Through her roles she made aging graceful and inspired a generation of women to be bold.
Looking back through her wide range of performances and accomplishments, Keaton continued to live boldly. With her honesty and humor brought to every character, she became a mentor to the audience.
Diane Keaton will be remembered as an unforgettable character who taught people to love yourself wholeheartedly.
