On December 6th, 2022, third-time Grammy-winning music artist, activist, and flutist, Lizzo refreshingly exceeded the norm for acceptance speeches when receiving “The People’s Champion” award at this year’s People’s Choice Awards. Lizzo shifted the attention from herself to spotlight 17 activists.

Lizzo’s mother, Shari Johnson-Jefferson, presented this award to her daughter, making the moment all the more personal. Once on stage, Lizzo states how when she heard about the award she was on the fence on whether she should accept it. She goes on to say, “if i’m the people’s champ, I don’t need a trophy for championing people.” Lizzo affirms that being an “icon” is about what you do with your platform. Lizzo uses her platform to amplify voices.

Behind Lizzo, 17 women activists are revealed. In this powerful moment, Lizzo lists each activist’s name with respect and precise pronunciation, announcing what they have done to deserve the “Champion of the People” title just as much as she does.

Some of these activists included 15-year-old Mari Copeny who spent the past eight years fighting for access to safe drinking water for all, Emiliana Guereca, founder of the Women’s March foundation, Maggie Mireles Thomas, the sister of a teacher who died protecting children during the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, who fights to end gun violence in American, and so many other incredible voices.

The emotion-filled presentation had an immensely positive reaction. Lizzo’s actions Tuesday, December 6th, is exactly what the people needed.

NBC’s YouTube channel posted Lizzo’s full People’s Choice Award speech. Under the video, hundreds of people shared how powerful her speech was, most of them saying it brought them to tears.

Lizzo’s actions even caught the attention of American singer-songwriter, Stevie Nick who took to social media to express love for Lizzo and her presentation.

Lizzo has been a positive and unstoppable force that many have grown to love. “I love Lizzo.” Junior Sara Sims says. “She is so passionate, talented, and genuine and the celebrity that the world needs right now.”

When asked to describe Lizzo in one word junior Paloma Brunson says, “I would describe her as genuine.”

Lizzo showed the world how a champion of the people gives a voice to the voiceless, platforms the seemingly invisible, and awards the too commonly unrewarded selflessness of 17 extraordinary people. Looking to the future, hopefully, other celebrities follow her example and do the same.
