Music is everywhere. It rings from the questionable speakers hooked up around the school and blares from the speakers of particular students’ cars in the parking lot. Students listen to their own music while driving around, doing homework, or during any other day-to-day activities that crave to be filled with this auditory art. Especially with the revolutionary creation of Bluetooth headphones, the sweet sounds of lyrics and beats are constantly saturating the Triton ears.

With the technological advances of the apparatuses we acquire to indulge in our genres of choice and of the various applications we stream our music off of; it is almost too easy to grow sick of the marvelous melodies. Even as someone who listens to various genres of music, I can find myself getting sick of what I listen to but continuing to crave filling up the silence with something. Junior Mika Kuhne cannot help but agree, “I get sick of listening to my music over and over again,” she said.

People struggling from this musical epidemic no longer need to fear, because podcasts are here!

This audio underdog is believed to be a more common practice among those of an older age group, podcasts are actually for everyone. These creatively curated digital audio files can range from true crime to self-help talks. There is such a wide variety of content in this media outlet that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The average podcast listener can reap a multitude of benefits from this pastime. Personally, a benefit I tend to revel in the most is the fact that multitasking seems to be easier while listening to a podcast compared to music.

“It is easier to listen to a podcast when doing my homework because it is slower paced so I can focus more,” said Junior Izzy Farrell. My favorite way to enjoy a podcast is when I am doing mundane chores or out on a spontaneous walk with my dog. Podcasts are the simplest way to entertain the mind but stay productive.

Listeners can remain physically productive with a pleasing podcast in their ears, as this type of entertainment medium allows one to be mentally productive by exposing the mind to new information, opinions, etc. One is more likely to learn something new from a podcast than a song. Listening to podcasts is proven to improve people’s listening skills and stimulate their mental imagery.

To demonstrate the variability of the podcasts available to eager listeners, here are a couple of recommendations compiled from me, fellow Tritons, and a popular podcast-streaming platform, Spotify.

Everything True Crime: My Favorite Murder

Hosted by American comedians Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark this true crime podcast finds a way to spin comedy into the mix of these stories full of mayhem. Become a “Murderino” as you begin to regularly enjoy their hometown crime stories from friends, fans, and various guests.

The two promise to “butter your brain” with their conversations. Their varying episodes will definitely make you laugh, smile, and/or learn something new.
