Around San Clemente High School, you will likely spot some “so far so good” merchandise around, created by our very own senior, Bowie De La Peña.
When asked about the creative process, De La Peña went into depth about the tweaks and time it took to create it to what it is today. “I first came across the phrase ‘so far, so good’ last summer in a film called ‘La Haine’. After hearing the phrase in the movie, it stuck with me, and I knew I had to make something out of it. Taking inspiration from my father and uncle, who founded the surf apparel brand Ezekiel, I decided to start my own.”
“I spent days glued to my desk developing my logo. Inspired by Dior’s logo, I decided to use a similar font to theirs for mine. At first the company consisted of just custom-painted garments I found at the Salvation Army using a stencil I had made.”
The local band Current Location was seen wearing some of the first “so far, so good” designs, as De La Peña explains, “I eventually got a gig making a set of custom jackets and coveralls for a local band to wear at their first live performance. Using my stencil, I created a small collection for the band. Their performance in my collection spread the name all over, so I eventually went to my dad and asked if he’d go in on an order of 36 official “so far, so good” shirts and sweatshirts with me. He accepted and less than a month after the shipment arrived, I broke even on our investment of $1000. I did so by creating a marketing campaign on Instagram with my own photographs of my product and by selling to the local skate shop, Republic of Kalifornia; the owner, Greg Morley, was more than willing to sell my product in their store.”
