Shrek is a movie that has raised a whole generation. Ask anyone from Gen Z what they think about Shrek, and I can guarantee you that they will only have something positive to say. While it seems silly that a movie about an ogre can have such an impact on a whole generation, “it’s the best movie made,” said junior Mia Lewis. Junior Ana Benito said that “the soundtrack is amazing; Smash Mouth really knows how to make good tunes.”
Now, what in the world does Steve Harwell have to do with the movie Shrek and the band Smash Mouth?
Named after a football term, Smash Mouth (Harwell’s band) has been widely credited with making the Shrek soundtrack what it is. Even though they only wrote two out of thirteen of the songs, “All Star” is one of the most recognizable songs to ever exist. Smash Mouth has four hit songs, in order being “Walkin’ on the Sun,” “All Star,” “Then The Morning Comes,” and a cover of The Monkees’ “I’m a Believer.” Originally, they were a part of the ska punk scene, but later on included psychedelic pop elements. Harwell had a great run with his band but retired due to health issues in October of 2021.
Sadly, these health issues were caused by alcoholism; Harwell was an addict for most of his life. In 2013, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and Wernicke encephalopathy, which affect both the heart and the brain. They can also affect functions such as speech and memory, and being a lead singer of a big band, this took a giant toll on him. In 2017, he was hospitalized before a show and was unable to perform due to his cardiomyopathy.
On September 3rd, 2023, Harwell was brought into hospice care for liver failure. The next day, September 4th, he sadly passed at the age of 56 in the comfort of his own home.
Steve Harwell had a great legacy; from being in a hit band to contributing to Shrek, you have to acknowledge his achievements. Harwell will be missed by everyone around the world.
Great story!!!! Good job Sophia!!
Keep it going!!
