What is WASC and how does it affect SCHS

During the week of March 3rd, a group of seven WASC members visited our school from Monday to Wednesday. This group included educators from schools all over California, and their job while in San Clemente was to pop into as many different classes as possible and watch how the teachers taught, students interacted, and everything that our campus has to offer.

To get accredited by the WASC association, our school must first make a report, which this year was made by Ms. Kang, along with other administrators and educators at SCHS. The committee then comes to our school where they look “to see whether the report…matches what is really happening on campus,” according to Ms. Kang. If our school does match the report we provided, we will then receive a six-year clearance, meaning that our school will not need another WASC visit for six years. This is the largest accreditation a school can receive and SCHS spent many months collectively working towards this visit in order to keep our impressive clearance rate.

A six-year WASC clearance is not only impressive but very beneficial to the future of our school. The long period of time between visits allows our administrators and teachers to have enough time to “improve on our growth areas based on their report and observations,” Dr. Baker informed during a discussion regarding the WASC report. Not only do the WASC committee members compare our school to the report that we made, but they also create a report of their own to recount our areas that need growth and our strengths as a school. They focus on all parts of our educational system: including the rigorous opportunities offered and the elective, art, and futurology opportunities and resources offered. The administration staff has created a three-year action plan based on the WASC report, and our hope is that following the next six years, San Clemente High School will have improved in all aspects, earning another six-year clearance.
