Since the beginning of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s very public relationship, they have received constant and intense backlash on every movement they make, whether that be socially or politically. They have been blasted in magazines, newspapers, and television world wide for simply being in the public eye. Along with that, British media has repeatedly hounded Markle, made heavily racist remarks toward her and her background, as well as critiqued her on miniscule affairs in an attempt to try and push her out of Britain.

On January 8th, 2020 via instagram, Prince Harry and Markle officially announced that they were going to be stepping down as “senior” members of the British Royal Family. This means that they will not be active with the Royal Rota system in any way. The couple is now planning to become financially independent, but will remain in full support of the Queen.

As for Harry and Williams relationship, it has torn them right down the middle with each brother standing on opposing sides. William said earlier this week that he was unhappy with Harry’s decision and that they are now “separate entities”.

British media claimed to be surprised by the couples sudden decision to step back, saying it was selfish, seismic, and rogue.

The New York Times stated  early this week, “if the media paid more attention to Britain’s communities of color, perhaps it would find the announcement far less surprising.”

“I feel bad for Meghan Markle,” SCHS senior Camryn Harrel said. “ If I was in her position I wouldn’t know how to act because there’s always eyes on you waiting to catch you slip up or fail. (Tramadol) ”

There has been a huge stigmatism around Meghan being of mixed race, even from the first article that was published about her called, “being almost straight outta compton”. The racist remarks and petty tag lines could have built up to them wanting to take a step back from the royal family and become more independent. Though many claim that the attacks on the duchess have nothing to do with her race, there is proof of the press and media using this against her.

Her treatment has proven that no matter what anyone does, where they come from, who they marry or what charity work they do, there will be people who want to take them down for unknown reasons to see their downfall.
