Once a semester, the San Clemente High School student body hosts “Club Rush,” where students campaign for their clubs to recruit new members or sign up for one of the dozens of clubs offered. Ranging from Robotics Club to Pickleball Club, students are sure to find a club that is suitable for their interests.
Presidents of clubs prepare for the chaos of club rush by creating flashy posters to attract members to join their club–or in some cases, use candy and snacks to encourage students to sign up for their club.
“Club Rush is the purest test of a club’s strength. It basically puts clubs against each other in the most barbaric way possible,” said senior president of the No Vape Club Leila Akhondzadeh. “At the end of it all, it is just a matter of mob mentality and asking your mom to bake fifty cookies.”
Many clubs here at SCHS have not only become popular on campus, but also at other schools. The beloved Cool 2 Be Kind Club, run by senior Esther Mafouta, has become a town-wide movement, with involvement from both Shorecliffs Middle School and Bernice Ayer Middle School to spread their anti-bullying agenda.
Not only do students have the chance to join clubs, they also have the opportunity to create new clubs here at San Clemente. This is exactly what senior Michelle Nguyen did, starting the Asian Culture and Community Union Club in 2019.
“My goal is to encourage confidence in Asian students here on campus,” San Clemente High School senior Michelle Nguyen said. “Also to further the hype around Asian Americans on campus.”
Although overwhelming at first, club rush is a great opportunity for SCHS students to get more involved in school activities in a positive and fun environment. With over 50 clubs to choose from, students are encouraged to celebrate the diversity of the many choices they have when signing up for clubs. While some are in popular demand, such as Be A Hero Become A Donor with dozens of sign-ups each semester, it is exciting to see the smaller clubs grow as students share and exchange their ideas on campus.
So whether you are a freshman or senior, starting or joining a club is a fun and exciting way to meet new people and get involved here at SCHS!
