Despite having no official national recognition, April Fools’ Day remains one of the most well known holidays in the world. Its origins are debated, since many festivals across the world are known to precede April Fools’ Day, such as Holi in India, Hilaria in Ancient Rome, and Sizdahbedar in the Persian culture. This holiday is celebrated throughout the world by playing harmless jokes on friends and family.

These jokes can range from petty pranks such as placing a Post-It note underneath a computer mouse to prevent the cursor from moving onscreen, or well thought out, elaborate schemes such as eating vanilla pudding out of a mayonnaise jar. Other prank ideas include creating a fake milk spill with white glue, using Cheerios to create a packet of “Donut Seeds,” and turning all of the furniture in a room upside down.

“I love April Fool’s,” remarked sophomore Sara Barnes. “I always play a prank on my mom before school because she never remembers!”

The thing to remember, though, on April Fools’ Day is that everything is in good fun; no one means to hurt anyone else. Although some of these pranks are silly and “punny,” they are all meant to bring a smile to someone’s face (after they realize it’s a joke, of course). Keep this in mind when planning your prank; you don’t want to end up losing a friend or getting in trouble.

April Fools’ Day has a legacy that no one can forget. In 1983, Durand, Michigan’s newspaper printed an April Fools’ Day story that “dihydrogen monoxide” had been contaminating the town’s water supply. When you think about it, “dihydrogen monoxide” – two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom – is actually just water, H2O.

On the whole, April Fools’ Day is a day to have fun and laugh a lot. With April 1st fast approaching, start brainstorming about your prank and how you are going to pull it off. The more thought-out your prank is, the easier it will be to pull it off. Have a great April Fools’ Day, and watch out: your friends might pull a prank on YOU!

“I’m planning something big this year for my class,” said Ms. Schmidt, an english teacher here at SCHS. “They’re never going to know what hit them!”
