Somebody in Maryland is unexpectedly $731 million richer.
A jackpot-winning Powerball ticket was sold at a convenience store in Lonaconing, Md., in the northwestern corner of the state. The ticket matched every one of the six numbers during Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing.
The $731.1 million jackpot is the fourth biggest in Powerball’s twenty-eight-year history, and the 6th biggest lottery jackpot ever in the United States, Powerball declared on Thursday. The drawing was the most elevated the jackpot has been since March 2019, when it rose to $768 million.
“With all that money I would pay off my family’s finances and take a trip around the world,” junior Shea Blaney said.
Powerball didn’t promptly name the winner, however. Lottery winners in Maryland can decide to stay anonymous, and they have 182 days to claim the prize.
The winning ticket was sold at Coney Market, a general store that sells subs and pizza in Lonaconing. It is a quiet community with a population of 1,200 in Allegany County- which has the most Covid-19 cases for every capita in the state. About a fourth of the number of inhabitants in Lonaconing lives beneath the poverty line.
“With worldwide poverty, if I won the money I would donate it to charity after buying my mom and me a beach house,” junior Michaela Pometto said.
The store will get a $100,000 reward from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket. The winning numbers in Wednesday’s drawing were 40, 53, 60, 68, 69, and a Powerball of 22.
The Powerball jackpot was last hit in New York in the Sept. 16 drawing. From that point forward, there had been 35 games in succession without a jackpot winner until Wednesday. (Tramadol)
The following drawing will be on Saturday when the Powerball jackpot resets to $20 million.
