Robots are slowly beginning to take over. Luckily, we’re not talking about the overhyped sci-fi idea of robots invading Earth. We’re talking about the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in our everyday lives, which we interact with whether we realize it or not. The AI that is evolving is much more intelligent than that.

From Siri to Alexa, self-driving cars to virtual assistants, AI is becoming a regular part of our daily routine. But as these machines become more innovative and advanced, some wonder what impact they’ll have on society as a whole.

Junior Claire Pham said, “I use my Alexa because it’s super helpful, but I’m honestly worried about if it’s listening to me all the time.”

On the one hand, AI can be a massive benefit to society. Just imagine a world where self-driving cars reduce the number of accidents on the road, or virtual assistants make our lives easier and more efficient. We could even see a future where AI-powered medical diagnoses save lives and improve healthcare for all.

As machines become better at performing tasks that used to be done by humans, some workers may find themselves out of a job. But on the other hand, some worry that AI could lead to job loss and economic inequality. Sophomore Emma Barbernell believes “AI will eventually take over all of our jobs because AI is so much smarter than most people.”

If only a select few individuals and companies have access to this technology, it could lead to a dangerous and widening social division.

So, what’s the verdict? Will AI lead to a utopia or a dystopia? The answer is still up in the air. One thing is for sure: the “robots” are here to stay. So, we might as well embrace them with open arms (and maybe even a little bit of fear). After all, it’s not like we can unplug them and send them back to the factory.

The rise of AI is a double-edged sword. It has the potential to greatly benefit society, but it also has the potential to create new problems. It’s up to us to ensure that we’re using this technology responsibly and ethically. So, let’s hope for the best, knowing that all of the answers surrounding AI’s future can only be determined by one thing: time.
