Disneyland is known for the joy it brings to the masses and in turn referenced as the happiest place on Earth. Living in southern California has its advantages, and easy Disneyland access is one of them. The quick drive makes the park irresistible for many, including students at San Clemente High School. This year is big for Disney as they are celebrating their 100th anniversary. The company has a cult following, which is why any major changes can stir up controversy among its die-hard fans.
As Disney steps into its next century of business, they are making some changes along the way. What once was the French Market will now be reimagined as Tiana’s Place from the movie, “Princess and the Frog.” Both The French Market and the Mint Julep bar will be closed on Feb. 17 until further updates.
Junior Addie Flynn revealed, “I love Princess and the Frog and I think that creating a restaurant based on Tiana’s Place from the movie is so smart. I will definitely be going!”
Disney will also be making some changes to the ride, Splash Mountain. Inspired by “Song of the South,” a film based in the South after the Civil War and has been criticized for racist stereotypes. The remodel was announced in 2020, along with a message from former Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger, “I’ve felt as long as I’ve been CEO that Song of the South — even with a disclaimer — was just not appropriate in today’s world. It’s just hard, given the depictions in some of those films, to bring them out today without in some form or another offending people, so we’ve decided not to do that.”
To bring the iconic story of the princess and her frog to life, the beloved Splash Mountain is set to become “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure” in 2024 at both the park located in Anaheim, California, and at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Florida.
Sophomore Stella Snyder, claimed “I go to Disney all the time and I’m super excited about the rework because I think will be way better than the original Splash Mountain.”
