Last week, SCHS girl’s flag football coach Marc Popovich was titled the Week 10 Los Angeles Chargers Coach of the Week. After an impressive first season of SCHS girl’s flag football, Popovich and his stellar team made Triton history, advancing to the CIF championship game. Though the players’ performance was outstanding, they could not have shined without the help of their coaches, specifically Mr. Popovich.
Being the first San Clemente High School flag football team in the school’s history, the girls faced many hardships throughout the season, learning to persevere. Senior and varsity star, Kiana Breshears, described how Popovich “always supports [them], no matter if [they] win or lose” and motivates them to play their best. Furthermore, Breshears explained that “Popovich’s analysis of all of [their] plays helps [them] advance as players.” With his intricate attention to detail, Popovich’s caring nature allows his team to excel, improving every game and ultimately leading them to the CIF championship game.
Not only does his thoughtfulness enhance the team’s performance but, Popovich’s attitude motivates the players to be their best on and off the field. Freshman and Junior Varsity player Stella Annaloro stated her love for Popovich’s “encouraging words that always build up the team, creating a positive team environment.” Senior and varsity teammate Madi Riggs added how Popovich “never fails to brighten [her day].” Popovich’s positive attitude glistens on the field, and he set a strong example throughout the season, inspiring his players to embody good sportsmanship.
Popovich’s great attitude and caring nature carry over into his classroom setting. As both the IB Global Politics and the IB/AP United States History (APUSH) teacher, Popovich brightens up the classroom with his engaging personality, turning history into a subject for everyone to enjoy. Junior and APUSH student Hanalei Marshall claimed to have “never found interest in history until [she] got Mr. Popovich as [her] teacher.” With Popovich’s engaging lessons, Popovich turns the hated history subject into a subject loved by all. Marshall also explained how she loves “Popovich’s encouraging and supportive approach” as it makes his students feel valued and inspires them always to try their best.
Popovich has proven himself to be not only an outstanding coach of the SCHS girls’ flag football team but also a beloved teacher who impacts his students’ and players’ lives beyond the classroom and field setting.
