On May 29, 2026, one of this year’s most awaited movies will finally be released in theaters. However, this story is not one that’s entirely new. The Backrooms movie is based on Kane Parsons web series and inspired by the “backrooms” creepy pasta that first became popular several years ago.

The Backrooms started with an eerie image posted online in an empty yellow hallway with bright yellow lights and carpet. Shortly after the photo was posted, internet users began creating stories about the unusual location. Their stories describe it as a place where people accidentally enter an otherworldly dimension and are trapped inside endless rooms with no escape. This unsettling idea quickly spread across social media platforms and many people found the concept intriguing yet creepy.

In 2022, Kane Parsons uploaded a Backrooms web series to Youtube. The videos became extremely popular as they contained realistic footage and a chilling atmosphere. The videos got millions of views and helped Parsons become a well known creator. The Backrooms series stood out because of its detailed visual effects and setting, especially because Parsons created much of it while still in high school, which inspired other young people to create films and stories as well.

Fans are expressing their excitement for this movie because it is being produced by A24, the studio behind popular films like Hereditary, The Drama, and Talk to Me. Due to the studio’s reputation, many believe that Backrooms has potential of becoming the best horror movie of 2026. Horror fans have also begun creating their own theories and expectations about the movie. SCHS junior Reese Wheeler believes that “The Backrooms movie will be so good because A24 always releases great movies, and just the trailer fascinated [her.]”

After the trailer for the movie came out, fans immediately created discussion online. While some have high expectations, others believe that the movie will explain too much about the mysterious world of the backrooms. The fear of the unknown is what makes the original web series scary. The endless hallways, hidden creatures, and unfamiliar sounds create suspense because anything can happen and whatever comes next is unknown. Viewers hope that the movie keeps the mysterious atmosphere as it is what makes it so intriguing and unsettling. The release of the Backrooms movie also shows how stories from social media platforms are influencing the creation of more horror movies. For example, online horror stories used to only live online, but now, studios are turning those viral stories into successful movies.

Others have also compared Backrooms to The Blair Witch Project because of their use of realism and suspense to spook audiences. Another film its being compared to is Skinamarink, which focuses more on tension and unsettling visions. SCHS junior Paige Richardson expressed that “The Backrooms movie does give off a similar vibe like The Blair Witch Project and it’s a really good movie so [shes] hoping that the Backrooms movie will also be good and scary.”

As the release date gets closer, excitement for Backrooms continues to grow online. Whether the movie becomes a huge success or not, it’s shown how an online creepy pasta can become a major part of modern horror culture. A strange image posted online years ago has now turned into one of the most talked about movies of 2026.
