Spirit Airlines took its last flight on May 2, 2026, after operations were shut down and went out of business after 34 years. The low-cost airline that made flying available to many halted abruptly overnight, canceling countless flights without warning. Their main reason for such a dramatic end is the rise in oil prices from the war with Iran.

As for the one-of-a-kind bright yellow airplanes, they are now being lined up in the Arizona desert. It is not for sure if they will ever take to the sky again, as discussion still arises on whether they will lease again or get removed completely. And for the individuals who took the planes to the sky themselves, the cabin crew and pilots, lose their jobs so suddenly they are left to scramble.

The company had been struggling financially for years as competition in the airline industry increased. Major airlines such as Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines started offering cheaper flights. With rising fuel prices, higher labor costs, and maintenance expenses, it was difficult for Spirit to keep up. In 2025, Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy twice in the span of one year which affected the routes they took, decreased the number of employees, and prevented them from sustaining their well-known cheap flights. Despite this, the company kept losing money.

The shutdown also affected travelers across the United States. Camryn Juncaj, a junior at SCHS, claimed that she first thought of “the families that cannot afford expensive flights and the people who lost their jobs” once the company shut down. Spirit had served many smaller airports and low-cost routes that other airlines ignored. After the airline collapsed, several routes lost all airline service entirely, while ticket prices on remaining routes increased because there was less competition. Industry experts warned that the disappearance of Spirit could lead to permanently higher airfare prices for budget travelers.

The shutdown of Spirit Airlines sparked widespread discussion online, not only because of the economic impact on workers and travelers, but also because of the reactions it generated across social media. Thousands of employees suddenly lost their jobs as the airline ceased operations, leaving many former workers struggling financially and searching for support. As people shared fundraising pages and personal stories online, the situation quickly became a major topic of conversation.

One controversy that emerged from the shutdown involved internet influencer James Charles. After a former Spirit Airlines employee allegedly sent him a message asking for financial assistance, Charles posted a video criticizing the worker and calling the request “lazy.” The video received immediate backlash, with many people arguing that his comments were insensitive toward employees who had unexpectedly lost their income. Although Charles later deleted the video and apologized, the incident demonstrated how social media personalities can influence public conversations during moments of economic crisis and how quickly online reactions can intensify public controversy. Adelaide Kipper, a Junior at San Clemente High School has “seen some resorting to influencers,” and that “it will be harder for people to find more accessible and cheap flights.”

The end of Spirit Airlines left a lasting impact on both the airline industry and the public. The shutdown showed how quickly financial problems can grow and how strongly people react during difficult situations. It also sparked conversations online about money, responsibility, and the way public figures respond to people struggling during hard times.
