Living in a place that combines nature and town nearly seamlessly, the inhabitants of San Clemente have quick access to a multitude of options for their recreational needs. This also means that the choices for dog-walking routes are infinite. From beaches, to parks, to trails, the choices can seem endless, and, in all honesty, overwhelming. However, this variety of dog-walking opportunities is far more beneficial than otherwise. This slew of selections serves almost any want or need; whether one simply desires a short walk, one with a view, or one near their home, San Clemente delivers.

I have a bloodhound and we live in south side San Clemente. We are fortunate to enjoy a beautiful, dog-friendly walk in whichever direction we choose. Every day yields a new adventure. Nonetheless, I cannot escape the daily decision between treks. That’s why I’ve curated a list of the best dog walking spots in San Clemente.

There is no particular order to these choices.

San Clemente Beach Trail

Best for a scenic stroll.

Arguably the most favored place to walk dogs in San Clemente, the Beach Trail is perfect for a hike with an up-close, picturesque outlook of this town’s amazing beaches. Junior Lauren Hill comments, “the Beach Trail is the place I walk my dog the most because your dog can meet so many other dogs. It’s neato!” With only a few small hills and a wide variety of surroundings, from sand to cliffs to homes, the Beach Trail accommodates both the walkers who crave a simple excursion with their pup to the ones who want to challenge themselves, being that the trail itself is over two miles long. It is certain that every dog and their human alike will love this trail.

Sea Summit at Marblehead Trail

Best for a mix of views and nature.

A rather new and refurbished set of trails, this set of pathways is a fitting choice for any dog and walker pair who yearns for both access to San Clemente’s native chaparral as well as a view of the North Beach coastal area. Four miles long and paved through with sandy dirt, this trail is a small escape from the busy town areas of San Clemente. Dogs are sure to enjoy the exposure to a multitude of plants, though limited by fencing. The Sea Summit at Marblehead Trail is a great selection for any dog walking needs. As Delaney Marchant, a junior, says, “Especially for dog owners, it’s nice to have wide sidewalks so that your dog can walk without getting in the way. Also, with the dirt, I feel less bad if my dog pees on the walk. Plus, it’s by the ocean and local!”

Cristianitos North

Best for the most exposure to preserved nature.

Close to my home, this is my most frequented walking choice. As soon as one enters the trails, they are immediately given access to some of the most preserved and native nature in San Clemente. (lowpricebud.co) With the ability to go on a rigorous, hilly hike or a calm stroll, this area is perfect for any dog walker. Furthermore, it’s a great place to explore the San Clemente chaparral with your dog!

Rancho San Clemente Ridgeline Trail

Best for a walk with a view.

Long and mostly flat, this network of trails has one of the most scenic views in all of San Clemente. Overlooking the entire town, this walkway is perfect for watching the sunset and exercising your dog without the vigor of a more taxing walk. As noted by junior Baily Donlin, “I love talking my dog up here. It’s a bit of a drive from my house, but it’s worth it every time.”

California Coastal Trail at Trestles

Best for a mix of views and nature. My personal favorite place to walk my dog, the California Coastal Trail at Trestles is like entering another world. Once someone and their dog go through the freeway underpass and enter the pure chaparral coastline area, one will understand why this is such an amazing place. Being that Trestles is beautiful place on its own, having the ability to share it with your dog (man’s best friend) is a great opportunity. Additionally, there are a myriad of big and small trails to choose from, so this choice welcomes all walking types.
