This past weekend, SCHS juniors and seniors dolled themselves up for the last dance of the 2018-2019 school year: prom. The event was held at the Ocean Institute with the theme “Prom a la Playa.”

On Saturday afternoon, about 4 hours prior to the dance, hundreds of students gathered at Pines Park for photos, typical of the average high school dance. Mothers and fathers intermingled amongst the students, taking pictures of both their children and their large groups of friends. Prom is one of the only instances in which SCHS students are able to dress to the nines. It’s considered the most formal of all the dances the school offers.

Although there is the biggest build up for prom, occasionally the venue doesn’t live up to people’s expectations. This year, “Prom a la Playa” harvested in mixed reviews. Many students felt disappointed with the DJ’s choice in music, as well as the rather small dance floor that was ultimately incapable of holding such a large amount of people. However, many loved the other things the Ocean Institute had to offer, some of which include touch tanks, pizza, s’mores, coffee, gelato, and a live jazz band with its own dance floor.

“I loved the venue,” said senior Isabella Anderson. “I thought it was great to take a break from dancing but have the opportunity to roast s’mores, eat pizza, get a coffee, or touch starfish.”

With so many other options, the dance floor and music appeared to not be a dominant issue. “They had so much food that I didn’t even need to eat dinner before,” said senior Emma Bishoff.

Overall, this year’s prom was fun and successful. The venue offered students a wide variety of activities, giving every individual the opportunity to have a good time.

This dance signals the end of the 2018-2019 school year. It gives students the ability to destress after the stress of AP and IB testing, but leads into the end of the year finals for others. To the juniors finishing up the year, good luck with your last year of high school. To the seniors, good luck with the rest of your lives!
