February 26th saw the beginning of the track season. The annual meet against the Huntington Beach Oilers saw great performances from all levels. Most events, on both sides of varsity and frosh/soph, were dominated by Triton athletes. While only a practice meet, the results still showcase promising talent that may help our track team be more competitive come April.
“We’re looking pretty strong so far, while we still have some work to do, this was a great start to the season,” San Clemente High School senior Alan Swann said. “We had very impressive performances from our freshmen runners with some PR’s from our other athletes in just our first meet.”
Coming back from a second place Sea View League finish in the 2019 season, the team is eager to put in the work to try to win league this year. Individually, last year saw many standout performances with campus celebrity, Hana Catsimanes, competing in the state meet for the 3200 meter race
“I’m really excited for the season to start because I’ve been waiting to try and get another shot at the state meet,” Catsimanes said. “Being my last year, I want to give it everything I can and try to inspire the younger runners to carry on a strong team.”
The next meet will be in Irvine for an Invitational, which the coaches hope will help the frosh/soph team grasp the competitiveness of track meets. Additionally, it will help athletes and coaches gage the competition in the Sea View League for this season. Capistrano Valley, Laguna Hills, San Juan, and Tesoro are the other teams in the Sea View League, which the team will face in dual meets against each of these schools. Naturally, Tesoro will be the most difficult team to face, as they won league last year. But, with a strong frosh/soph team to bring up the bottom end of the team and breakout individual stars on varsity, the team will be a strong contender for another league title and potentially many individual athletes progressing into CIF.
With league finals in April, the team will have a few months to fully prepare and train hard for a league title.
