Studs, denim, and an energetic crowd. No, this isn’t a rock concert. It’s the SCHS Battle of the Bands, an annual event where students get to show off their talent and perform in front of a large crowd and three judges. The winner of the contest gets an impressive trophy and of course, bragging rights.
This year’s line-up consisted of a few local, all boy bands. First up was “Cheddar Blade.” They displayed a quirky mix of instruments like drums, the saxophone, and the trumpet. These guys put on a spectacular performance! Their choice of instruments along with the formal attire gave a sort of 1920’s vibe. The band connected with the crowd through their theatrical performance. After the performance we asked “Cheddar Blade” how they got together as a band to which group member Evan Harris replied “we all got together because we love music and have a passion for it.”
Next up, “Squappy and the Hally Boys” hit the stage. As soon as they walked out, I immediately assumed that this was going to be anything but a serious performance, but as soon as they started playing, that assumption washed away. Their combination of bright colors and sunglasses added a bit of a summer feel. They covered the song “Money” by “The Drums” which added to that bright feeling. By throwing a bit of harmonica into their second song, “Sunglasses,” they blew the crowd away. Their energetic performance left everyone in a upbeat mood. The boys explained their style to the Triton Times as “post alternative beach rock.”
The next band was “Day 1371.” This name was created when the lead singer was wondering how many days were left until graduation. He then thought “Hey that sounds like a cool band name!” This band’s DGAF attitudes, combined with their all black attire made for some pretty serious rock vibes. Their performance was amazing, with a solo from a blue-haired drummer in between songs.
Last, but certainly not least, was the band “You Gotta Have Milk.” The only way I can explain the performance is with the word, “intense.” While Draco Tudor and the rest of his band were rocking out, they seemed almost unaware of Colin Horan, who gave his own performance on the sideline. The band’s mix of music and acting combined for an unforgettable performance.
After all the bands left the stage, the judges had a surprise. As a band themselves, they gave the crowd an amazing performance. It was unexpected, and the crowd totally loved it.
After their performance, it was time to announce the winner. Based on the categories, (stage presence, audience interaction, and confidence) they announced “Cheddar Blade” as the 2015 Battle of the Bands winner. It was a tough decision with all of the bands displaying true talent, and no one can deny that they all rocked the stage.
Sounds like a great night…I should have gone but I had to babysit :/
