San Clemente girls’ soccer is a well-known program, not just for their tight-knit bond as teammates, but also their incredible record.
Perhaps the most memorable game of the season was Mater Dei vs. SCHS in the second round of CIF. “I don’t think anyone thought we were going to win so standing there watching Sophie [Yeskulsky] make the winning penalty kick after Emily Sanchez saved MD’s fourth penalty kick was amazing,” junior Megan Mills recalled.
With 24 goals made this season, it’s no surprise so many are intimidated to face off with San Clemente. These fierce girls worked their way to being undefeated South Coast League Champions, which is a tough title to earn. Their season of ten wins proves these girls’ hard work and determination to continue to grow their program and show off their chemistry.
“I feel that this year we are more bonded and more of a team than last year. With Coach Finnerty coming back, I really feel that we were able to play at our full potential,” Mills said.
Their strong relationships with one another helped to carry them through some of the toughest moments in the season, including a devastating loss in round two of CIF to Temecula Valley.
This season’s Senior Night was even more emotional than those of years’ past due to the bond the younger players feel with the veterans. Despite an unfortunate 0-0 tie against Trabuco Hills, the four seniors–Faith Gillett, Jordan Brail, Ellie Ewell, Emily Sanchez, and Abby Succi–were still sent off with a celebration of speeches and flowers.
“My favorite thing about playing soccer would be the bond we created,” junior Rachel Millard said. “I’ve been playing with the same people for three years and it’s so fun to laugh with them on and off the field.”
The community and power San Clemente girls’ soccer brings to our school speaks volumes on Head Coach Stacey Finnerty and her amazing teams. The girls may have lost CIF this year but there is no doubt they will be back for a rematch for next season!
