U.S. regulators announced on Saturday, June 3rd that over 61,000 pounds of Trader Joe’s steamed chicken soup dumplings were being recalled for possible contamination. The soup dumplings have been a staple piece in Trader Joe’s for years serving as a lunchtime favorite. “The soup dumplings have always been one of my favorite after-school meals,” stated senior Lila Santana.

The Agriculture Department’s Food Service and Inspection Service claimed that the dumplings produced by CJ Foods Manufacturing Beaumont Corp may be contaminated with “hard plastic from a permanent marker pen.” The recall came in after consumers complained about finding hard plastic in the dumpling soup. However, FSI assures to date there have been no related illnesses or injuries reported.

In response to this recall, Trader Joe’s is advising customers who purchased Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings with a best-by date of March 7, 2025, and a lot code C1-1 or C1-2 to throw away the product. Trader Joe’s is also offering customers a full refund if they choose to return the item to any Trader Joe’s store. Foreign contamination has been a major reason for food recalls in the U.S. due to bits of bugs and metal fragments being found. Nonetheless, a spokesperson for CJ Foods Manufacturing Beaumont Corp added that “customer safety remains our No. 1 priority.”

Junior Claire Massamiri was shocked to hear the new: “I have gotten food poisoning from food contamination but never from a Trader Joe’s product,” she claimed. In the past, Trader Joe’s has had a pretty clear track record when it has come to food contamination, with it only happening a few times in the summer of 2023.
