Today, Boys Football is advancing to CIF, going against the Beaumont Cougars. The Tritons have gone 6-4 and 2-1 in the league, securing them a proud 2nd place spot. Throughout the season, San Clemente has experienced some changes, including the switch from junior Eiler King to Sophomore Preston Beck as their starting quarterback. Additionally, the Tritons had to learn to collaborate with a new wide receiver coach and a defensive lineman coach. However, the Tritons have proven successful both on and off the field as a team.

Due to their successful season, the Cougars carried an impressive 8-2 record, proving that they would put up a fight in Thalassa Stadium. However, junior Joshua Díaz explained that he thinks his team will “prove strongly with [their] running and passing.” Díaz is the offensive guard, having an impressive season and continually proving successful when protecting quarterbacks. Díaz explained that the switch in quarterbacks changed his game, as he had to learn a new offense; however, he had to adapt in order for his team to successfully qualify for CIF.

Additionally, junior Blake Miller, cornerback for the team, exclaimed that he is proud of his team for getting to CIF, explaining that they got there using “teamwork and rallying together in tough situations.” Miller admitted that it’s incredible to be a part of a bonded group where everyone puts in their best effort. Many of the boys have a lot to live up to after the 2016 State win, a legacy they hope to build on. Miller described himself as “looking forward to the playoff atmosphere,” hoping to bring back a second trophy to San Clemente.

In the end, our team will have to put up a good fight, and must “take it one week at a time and focus on this Friday,” as Miller mentioned earlier this week. Despite a prediction for a win by many, Miller added, “We have to respect and not underestimate our opponent.” Furthermore, Díaz shed some light to the excitement of being in the game explaining that “it’s something that you see as a kid, and being on the field for CIF never gets old, even on [his] 3rd time.”

To enter any CIF game, you must pay for tickets even if you have an Abyss or ASB card. Look at GoFan for tickets and information, and make sure to go out tonight and root for our boys!
