Throughout the years of 2012-2017, one thing intertwined every young kid’s lives across America. That thing? Vine, a beautiful app used to create and share funny six-second moments. During its five years of life, Vine produced an insane amount of content, with millions of videos gaining traction. Thanks to Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, the beloved lost friend Vine is finally being resurrected under a new name, “diVine.”

Vine was originally shut down by its parent company, which is ironically Twitter. The app was forced to face closure due to its struggle to monetize and competition from other up-and-coming apps such as Instagram. While it quickly rose to fame, Vine just as quickly went downhill with its top creators abandoning it to die just five years after its launch. Even though Vine shut down due to its downturn in popularity, it seemed as though everyone was upset when the news was announced. Cameron Dorn, junior at SCHS, recalled that when Vine became unavailable she had to “watch compilations on YouTube.” Even though users were scrapping the app, Vine without a doubt had a nostalgia factor that was important to every 2000s kid.

A key to the relaunch is the fact that Dorsey decided to make over 100,000 original Vines available to users in the diVine archive, sparking fond memories among OG Vine viewers. Dorn added that she loves this feature because it gives this generation of children a chance to “laugh at the classics like [herself] and others [as well].” Old Vine users find it important to revive the app to give more kids the opportunity to experience what was such a positive thing for them. Junior Asher Lloyd stated that he cannot wait for the staple “corny humor” of Vine to make a comeback with the relaunch.

In addition to the archive, an even more appealing aspect of diVine is the ban of AI-generated content. In a time where artificial intelligence is growing in every area of our lives, diVine is here to give users an escape from the modern time and a loophole back into their 2010s childhood. Dorsey stated that the lack of AI is intended to stimulate, encourage, and celebrate human creativity rather than cover it up with computers, a fresh perspective in the technology industry.

The release of diVine has resurfaced many emotions for Vine users across the country, including peers at SCHS. Lloyd claimed that he will download the app to “watch old videos and new ones” and even create some of his own! With the perfect combination of the original format and new additions like the archive and AI ban, diVine is the app that we need in today’s chaotic world. An app that will bring us back to simpler times, when videos were six seconds long and artificial intelligence was only present in Sci-Fi movies.
