The 50th season of the hit television show “Survivor” is set to premier on February 25th. This new season marks the show’s 25-year anniversary.

The show has been popular since the turn of the century, but fans are especially excited for this upcoming season due to its legendary all-star cast.

According to long time fan and SCHS senior Chloe Chafin, the Survivor 50’s cast is “stacked with some of the best players in the show’s history.” Big name “old-school” players such as Cirie Fields, Ozzy Lusth, and Colby Donaldson are hitting screens again this season, as well as some newer yet equally beloved castaways like Jonathan Young and Q Burdette.

Though this exciting cast is expected to boost viewership, lingering complaints about Survivor’s “new era” have ultimately caused a decline in the show’s popularity. Following season 40, the structure of the competition underwent several changes that has left fans disappointed.

Partially due to the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic, the show no longer takes place in a different country each season. Instead, producers reuse the same group of islands in a reserved location in Fiji. SCHS senior Mikaela Benumof commented on how it “used to be more interesting when they would move places.” The lack of diversity in setting causes the seasons to be repetitive and difficult to distinguish from one another.

Additionally, the new era of Survivor shortened its cast size from (an average of) 24 to 18 players and its length from 39 to 26 days. These downsizes, as expressed by many fans, have caused the new seasons to feel rushed and impersonal, making the social aspect less dramatic and the castaways less memorable.

The sheer amount of seasons has resulted in the tendency of new era players to attempt to mimic the personalities and strategies of past contestants, making for a predictable lack of originality.

These qualities of Survivor’s new era have made the show overall less engaging according to the media. Will Survivor 50’s promising cast turn this trend around and recapture the same popularity the show once had?
