Oliver “Ollie” Martin’s arrival at the international snowboarding Youth Olympic Winter Games Gangwon 2024 announced his debut in the professional snowboarding realm. Then, just after having his global snowboarding debut at age 16 at the 2024-2025 World Cup, Ollie Martin has become a quick sensation from the United States as he slides his way into the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Not only did his historic appearance made him well known, he is also recognized for being the youngest boarder ever to land a 2160 during his training session in Colorado and the only boarder to land a frontside and backside 2160. On top of that, he became the youngest male rider to win a Winter Cup slopestyle event. Additionally, in the 2025 Calgary Snow Rodeo, Martin had an impressive run that featured technical rail combinations and an incredible front double cork 1440 indy off a shark fin that captivated audiences, and definitely the judges. From then on, he kept getting enrolled into competitions that would also include the World Championships in Switzerland, which resulted in receiving bronze medals in both the slopestyle and big air events.

Ollie specializes in slopestyle and big air snowboarding events. For those who don’t know, slopestyle is a type of freestyle contest where snowboarders or skiers perform a variety of acrobatic maneuvers while navigating a sloping course that features rails and jumps. Big Air snowboarding competitions are when athletes launch themselves off a massive ramp to perform aerial tricks like spins or flips. In Big Air competitions, riders usually get three runs, with the two best runs being scored.

Although the Colorado native who was born in New Zealand was the youngest on the Men’s Snowboard Big Air, Martin had many factors going against him as he was the only American left in the finals and had a broken arm! Even with this, Martin stayed positive, cool, and collected as the pressure tripled in size as he went down the big jump. Unfortunately, the young boarder just barely missed making the podium, and was placed fourth in the event. Nevertheless, he still felt honored to be at the Olympics at age seventeen.

On another note, his older brother, who pushed him into this “snowboarding hobby turned passion,” Kade Martin is also being pushed into the spotlight over at the halfpipe.

While the Winter Olympics captured over 28 million viewers, two sophomores, truly recognized his talent and grit. Isis Peralta shared “that Ollie Martin is a fearless snowboarder who should make everyone proud in the USA,” while Madison Clark “was rooting for him the whole time and thought he had a good shot of winning even though he had a broken arm” in the finals.

While he didn’t make it to the podium for Big Air, he still has another chance to win a medal through the slopestyle event, which qualifying matches begin Monday, February 16, and the final round on Wednesday, February 18. This is just the beginning of this teenager’s journey, as this adventure will surely send him through a whirlwind of opportunities as the public spotlight shines brighter and brighter for him. His story is not only inspiring, but also tells how a small thing can change one’s life, and whether it does or not, one should always go after their dreams and interests, no matter how big or small.
