On February 17, 2026, the family of prominent civil rights figure Jesse Jackson pronounced on social media that he had passed away peacefully and surrounded by family at the age of 84. Supporters and friends of his were quick to express their emotions online and to honor his life with kind messages and posts.
Jesse Jackson was widely known for his activism fighting for racial equality, voting rights, and job opportunities. Throughout his life, he worked with other leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, such as Martin Luther King Jr., James Bevel, and Ralph Abernathy. Jackson has led national organizations, helped organize protests, and even ran for president in 1984 and 1988.
Jackson also founded Operation PUSH (people united to save humanity) which focused on economic empowerment of black communities, and the National Rainbow Coalition, which consolidated a voting block across racial lines. Eventually, in 1996, he merged the two organizations, which are now known as the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. SCHS Junior Paige Richardson shared her strong belief that “Jesse Jackson’s organizations are important even to this day because millions of people, no matter their race or gender, felt seen and heard for the first time.”
Following Jackson’s death, longtime supporters, including political leaders, Civil Rights Movement members, and family, paid tribute, honoring him as a “voice for the voiceless” and an icon who “dared to keep hope alive.” President Donald Trump called him a “force of nature,” while former president Joe Biden honored him as a “man of God and of the people.” Former Vice President Kamala Harris called him one of “America’s greatest patriots” who gave a voice to the powerless. Fellow Rev. Al Sharpton described him as a transformative mentor and father figure who changed American politics. His family’s statement highlighted his devotion to being a father and dedicating his life to the “oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked.”
For many supporters, Jackson’s life represented faith in the possibility of change and persistence. Through his speeches and political campaigns, he encouraged millions of Americans to believe that their voices matter and inspired a new generation of activists and leaders who are now following in his footsteps. These activists are observing Jackson’s work and using it as an example of how determination and advocacy can make a difference. SCHS junior Azucena Aguilar explained how she is passionate that “Jesse Jackson will forever remain an influential and important part of history because he paved the way for Barack Obama to run for president and has influenced millions of people to stand up for what is right.” In the coming week, memorial services will be held to honor his achievements and the lasting influence he had on American society and politics.
While Jackson’s passing leaves a void for many who admired his leadership and bravery, his messages of perseverance and hope will be remembered forever. His lifelong commitment to change influenced millions of people worldwide and inspired them to stand for justice and equality. Although this marks the end of an important chapter in the Civil Rights Movement, Jesse Jackson will always remain one of the nation’s most recognizable figures. And like Jesse Jackson Jr. said about his father, “his last breath is not his last breath.”
