In the last few decades, the British street artist Banksy has been one of the world’s most influential and mysterious artists. He uses a stencil graffiti technique to quickly spray paint his pieces onto walls or random surfaces in cities to tackle global issues on politics, war, the environment, inequality, and identity. While his art displays powerful messages to people, his mysterious act is where he holds most of his power over people. A 2022 investigation by Reuters found new evidence that strongly suggests Bankys is a man named Robin Gunningham from Bristol, England. Later, it was discovered that this man changed his name to one of the most common male names in Britain, David Jones, likely in order to hide in plain sight.

This investigation included clues about Banksy through old photographs, tracing his artwork, eyewitnesses in his recent visit to Ukraine, and even a written confession from 2000 regarding a vandalism report in New York. Each of these pieces led to the story of Mr. Gunningham. Senior Sarah Sevilla said that she “admire[s] Banksy for staying hidden for so long. At this point, it should stay that way because if he gets revealed, he might stop making art.”

A major controversy surrounding Banksy is past the art he creates, but why is it when he spray-paints public places, his work is praised, while other people vandalizing leads to immediate consequences? By law, graffiti is considered illegal in many European countries and most people who take part in the act face fines. Yet Banksy’s work is handled with a different approach. It is preserved, cared for, admired, and treated as valuable assets cut out of walls and sold at auctions. People who support Banksy’s reign in the street art world believe that because his works represent powerful ideas about human rights, politics, war, inequality, and more, that they should stay up and he should not be penalized for sticking up for humanity. This could be another reason why he does not want to reveal his identity; he wants to protect his safety from social power-banks like the government. Ultimately, this debate brings the controversy to a deeper level, highlighting the idea between power, privilege, and who is actually holding the spray can. Over time, Banksy has definitely blurred the line between the definition of street art crime.

Beyond Banksy’s public celebrity status, he is also a celebrity in every high school English classroom. With his art exploring global issue themes, he challenges the way of society and expresses his frustrations by targeting larger audiences who can relate or see the relation in others. Senior Jenna Sinden revealed how she felt that “Bansky’s art inspired [her] to think deeper about the social and even political issues [she sees] in the world today.” She also claimed that “on the plus side, he gave [her] endless examples and ideas to use in many English projects [she] had in class.”

Knowing Banksy’s true identity raises the question of whether or not revealing his identity would have changed the message. Still, even if he does not decide to stay anonymous, his impact remains. His art ignites discussions in not only classrooms, but on the street, in the media, and in normal conversations. He pushes the world to see new perspectives everyday.
