Each year, A-list celebrities strain the limits of standard fashion at the highly anticipated Costume Institute Gala hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. More commonly known as the Met Gala, this ball allows the famed to dress in ensembles that would regularly be detested by critics and fans alike. With annually alternating themes, this bash is highly anticipated in terms of fashion distinctiveness and bizarre beauty.
Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of American Vogue, serves as the annual chair of the entire event, and under leadership from a fashion icon such as herself, each celebration is sure to top the last. This year’s co-chairs were Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada.
The theme of this year’s function was Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology. Inspiring a slurry of metallic undertones and futuristic fabrics, this suggestion proved beneficial to nearly all attendees. Sleekness and suavity were a must, and a polished gleam reflected off of every party-goer.
Some of the best outfits from the evening are pictured above.
At this point, Willow Smith is without a doubt one of the most fashionable attendees at any event in which she is invited. Less is more, especially with this particular outfit. Very chic, this ensemble combines both feminine components with a typical suit. Cinching the look together is her high-fashion nose ring and hair clip, which actively allow the outfit to make a statement that doesn’t overwhelm.
With a dress that imitates the rainbow reflection of sunlight, Lorde not only stuns crowds with her natural beauty, but her ability to wow even with an arm cast. Debuting a shorter hairdo, Lorde overpowered the red carpet with her subtle statement. As junior Baily Donlin commented, “This dress is something I would imagine in a dream, it seems to float like a cloud!”
Already overwhelming fans with the release of her album, Lemonade, Beyonce enchanted critics with her alluring fitted dress. Following a trumpet shape, her dress not only exemplifies the sleekness of the machine-driven theme, but the elevated shoulder and scattered beading scream individuality.
Naturally stunning, Lupita Nyong’o took control of the red carpet with her equally admirable dress and hair. Sporting the traditional African hair statement of piling hair to reflect social status, Nyong’o initially received some critique for this choice due to its widely unknown meaning. However, adoration abounded for her entire ensemble.
A pairing that simply bleeds beauty, FKA Twigs and Robert Pattinson and their timeless looks became the favorite of many onlookers. Delaney Marchant, a junior, noted, “I really liked FKA’s head-chain, it was a really unique piece that was a little edgy but still elegant. I also loved how it was paired with a simpler dress.” Reminiscent of classic Hollywood from Mars, this couple cleanly matches the theme and each other.
