The Met Gala.  The prestigious event that serves to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art was home to many famous faces on Monday Night, May 7th.

Fashion is the focus of the ball, and each year, the Met Gala has a theme that the fashion should reflect. This years theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” The topic was originally viewed as controversial, due to the possibility of fashion choices coming off as offensive to the religion. However, once the night came around, almost all controversy was forgotten in favor of the magical haute couture on the red (actually creme) carpet.

A Few of the Good:

Rihanna

Rihanna, known to take fashion risks in the past at this event, stepped out in a Pope inspired dress by Margiela. Although seeming to play it safe compared to last year, she still proved to be one of the most striking at the event.

Gigi Hadid

Stunning in a piece with stained-glass inspired detail, Gigi’s Versace dress wowed. It was not as over the top as many of the Met Gala looks tend to be, but was elegant as well as following the theme.

Cardi B

Glowing in her pregnancy, Cardi B stepped out in a 30-lb dress by Jeremy Scott, alongside the designer himself. “I think Cardi B did a really good job in following the theme,” Seidy Trenary, junior, stated. “Her look stood out, but not in an extremely over the top way.”

A Few of the Bad:

Jaden Smith

Although not a horrible look, Jaden Smith’s outfit was far from the theme, and didn’t suit the occasion. To add on, he brought the gold certification of his song “Icon.” This look was simply subpar because it avoided the theme, and he seemed to draw focus away from the occasion.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s 6 foot wings proved to be the centerpiece of her ensemble. They aimed to make her appear angelic, but were so over the top that they were borderline trashy. The look would’ve been far more beautiful had she worn smaller, more delicate wings.

Selena Gomez

The theory behind Selena Gomez’s look was there, but the execution was where the ensemble fell short. The dress, though beautiful, didn’t do much to flatter Gomez’s figure. To add on, Gomez had obviously received a spray tan, but ended up looking more like she had used a little bit of peanut butter for foundation. She was beautiful, but the little things in her look were what went wrong with it.

This year, the fashion of the Met Gala were far more understated than ever before. “I think the Met Gala has over the top, crazy weird clothes most of the time, but it didn’t really stick to that as much this year,” Isabella Anderson described. The theme resulted in many beautiful Catholic inspired dresses, and it was surprising to see how a majority of the A-list celebrities stuck to the theme of the event. It’s reputation as one of the biggest fashion events was maintained by those in attendance.
