As of January 24, the 95th annual Academy Awards, aka the Oscars, nominations have officially been announced. Dominating the leaderboard are this past year’s biggest hits including, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Elvis,” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

Of all of the categories available, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” makes an appearance in almost all of them, and comes in with the most nominations this year, eleven in total. In second and third for a number of nominations are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” a war drama, and “The Banshees of Inisherin” a comedy/drama.

Battling for “Best Picture,” arguably the most anticipated category, are: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fablemans,” “Tar,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “Women Talking.”

When asked about what she believed makes a film “Best Picture Worthy,” senior at SCHS, Tessa Campbell said, “It really matters with what the director and producers do with shot proxemics. The Actors really contribute to the storytelling of a film but the shot framing is key in telling the overall story without words.”

Notable actors and actresses up for Oscars consist of Austin Butler in “Elvis,” Brendan Fraser in “The Whale,” Paul Mescal in “Aftersun,” Cate Blanchett in “Tar,” Ana de Armas in “Blonde,” and Michelle Williams in “The Fablemans.”

While each of the movies and all of the other nominations undeniably deserve incredible recognition for groundbreaking cinematography, skilled casting, and talented producers, to some fans, there is a clear-cut winner for each category.

Senior at SCHS, Raina Provencio said, “The movie “Elvis” is personally one of my favorite movies and it made me a huge fan of Elvis Presley. I hope it wins multiple academy awards at the Oscars.”

Taking place at the iconic Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the 2023 Oscars will be streaming Sunday, March 12, on ABC and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Make sure to tune in to see some of your favorite movies win on films’ biggest night of the year!
