Although last season ended on a disappointing note, coming in a close second for the South Coast League championship against Dana Hills, the Triton girls’ tennis team looks to make this one of their best seasons yet. With an experienced set of seniors leading the way, the team feels more confident than ever that they’ve got all the skills needed to have another shot at winning a league title.

Almost mid-way through their season, the team puts a focus on team bonding and building their chemistry. This driving force behind the team’s success seems to be a common theme. One notable senior is Samantha Mitchell, who put an emphasis on the necessity of team bonding. When asked about their continued preparation for this season, Samantha commented that she was “excited for the team sleepover”. With seniors such as herself driving events inside and outside of tennis, we can only see the team’s potential multiply. Combined with a practice environment that is “fun, focused, and competitive”, the girls are pushed to improve day after day

While having a bond with your teammates is vital, one thing you can’t emphasize enough is how critical sideline support is. Tennis, being more of an individual sport and less of a team sport, makes it extremely important to have a sideline cheering the players on. While there has been a lack of student body showing their support, leaving the parents to carry the bulk of the job, the girls on the team have stepped up more than ever this past season.

Having their teammates encouraging them from the sideline, the Tritons found themselves with a big edge over their opponents. Home or away, their support never goes away which was something Junior Coco Bush emphasized. She also commented on the mental aspect of the matches and with tennis “being more of an individual sport, it is important to have a strong mind. Mentality determines the entire match so having teammates around you to keep you calm is extremely important”.

Soon facing rival San Juan during league play, the team looks to strive towards one of their first CIF playoff berths. Continuing to work hard and push each other, the team sees this as being very achievable. Come out to show your support this coming week as the Tritons face off against Trabuco Hills at home this Tuesday (9/19).
