Actor Mason Thames is rapidly becoming one of our generation’s biggest stars.
Last week, Thames’ third movie of the year, Regretting You, a film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s rom-com novel, reached #1 in the Billboard’s top 100 new release movies. Coupled with his two other hit movies in 2025, How to Train Your Dragon and The Black Phone 2, Mason Thames became the first actor since Jim Carrey in 1994 to have three films make Billboard #1 in a single year.
This feat is especially impressive when considering the fact that he is freshly 18 years old. Thames’ acting career began at age 11 and blew up from then on, having played key roles in 7 different movies so far.
His breakthrough role was main character, Finney in The Black Phone. Thames’ work in the film lead him to win four prestigious awards in 2023, including the Editor’s Eyeball Award, the Hollywood Critics Association Film Award, the Fangoria Chainsaw Award, and the Bram Stoker Award, as well as several nominations.
Thames showcases his acting range with the three films that helped him receive his spot in Box Office history. After starring in the horror genre, he went on to play the nostalgic role of Hiccup in the childhood classic, How to Train Your Dragon, helping bring the animated story to life. Senior at SCHS Makenzie Granum who saw the movie in theaters, commented Thames’ “exceptional acting brought [her] back to the good old days.”
From here, Thames took on the character Miller in the romantic comedy Regretting You. The movie’s overwhelmingly positive reception has recently been taken to the next step following rumors of a blossoming relationship with co-star Mckenna Grace. Simone Griffin, a sophomore at SCHS, explained how “obsessed” she has been with the two’s dynamic in their current and ongoing press tour. Mason’s connection with Mckenna has only increased his traction and popularity in the media.
The couple will be featured again in one of Thames’ upcoming films about a rookie band opening for Green Day: New Year’s Rev. Though not having a confirmed general release date, the movie is expected to be hit among all audiences, especially punk rock fans.
It is clear that Thames has already made his mark in acting history, and his journey has only just begun.
