For many, fall is full of savory and hearty meals–especially for Thanksgiving. However for some, fall is far from that. Families from every community suffer year-round to put food on their tables daily. San Clemente High School has decided to bring our community together and create a Canned Food Drive to provide food for those who need them most for this upcoming holiday.

FAM, (Family Assistance Ministries), has worked with staff at San Clemente High School to make it possible for students to easily donate to those in need. These drives and donations are not just around the holidays–they’re happening all year round! FAM ensures that those who are struggling can have access to more than just food, but also basic necessities. They will provide those in need with essential toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and sunscreen, but also care for their young ones by providing baby formula, baby wipes, and diapers, which have been in high-demand.

San Clemente High School teacher Ms. Bennett has been very passionate about this project, encouraging staff to put boxes in their rooms for students to donate what they can. Bennett described how “a community can appear really well off and seem to need no help” but how behind the scenes “there is a need, and we need to help.” In a place like San Clemente, it can be hard to think that there might be some people struggling in this seemingly comfortably living city. The truth is there are people struggling, and they need our help.

At FAM they believe community drives bring people together and that volunteers are the backbone of this ministry. As of now their demands for food have increased by 61% and they need volunteers now more than ever. Whether it’s once a week, once a month, or every once in a while–anything helps! Senior at SCHS Rylee Kervick emphasized how FAM has “easy ways to volunteer and support people in need.” There are opportunities for everyone in Orange county with volunteer sites in San Clemente, Laguna Niguel, Dana Point, and San Juan Capistrano.

Join FAM’s mission to assist those in need with food and shelter so they may have a chance for a better life.
