Originating in Buffalo, New York, the first ever Thanksgiving Turkey Trot took place in 1896 by the local YMCA, and although only six runners participated in that race, Turkey Trots have grown worldwide. The biggest one takes place in Chicago, with over 44,000 runners yearly.
Whether you are a walker, jogger, or runner, Turkey Trots are the perfect opportunity to stay fit before the big feast of Thanksgiving Dinner. It is also a great way to have fun with friends and family aside from the dinner table. From costumes to food, these events are a part of every community, whether you are in a small town or big city.
From running short distances to long distance races, one can never be too prepared for the big day. For those who have never run a 5K, it is best to start off with short distances and gradually add on more miles. This can include walking and jogging, but make sure to stretch before and after your runs! On the day of your Turkey Trot, remember to warm up and stay hydrated.
If you are looking for a Turkey Trot to participate in, California has numerous options. From trail runs to road courses, snow to sunny days, and 1 mile to half marathons, the variety matches up to most race preferences.

Sophomore Morgan Stone, expressed that “Turkey Trots are really fun, and [that] everyone should try it at least once” as they are even “more fun when you are doing it with someone.” She is planning on “doing the Shorecliffs Turkey Trot with [her] brother.”
Additionally, Sophomore Anela Saxton runs the Dana Point Turkey Trot every year “because it’s a family tradition and a way to spend time with [her] family.” She usually “only prepares for the race mentally, but [she] probably should run a little before the race day to get back in shape.”
