Following the controversial release of the iPhone 17 over its striking appearance, Apple has now released the iPhone Pocket. This accessory, created in collaboration with ISSEY MIYAKE, has had a negative reaction among Apple fans. In the past decade, Apple’s premium reputation has continued to deteriorate with each new product release, but with the recent introduction of the sock-like iPhone Pocket, some feel that this design has confirmed their speculations that the company is on a downhill spiral.

Apple defenders argue that this release fits their aesthetic and notoriety because of its designer collaboration and price tag. One design director at ISSEY MIYAKE said, “The design of iPhone Pocket speaks to the bond between iPhone and its user, while keeping in mind that an Apple product is designed to be universal in aesthetic and versatile in use.” While the versatility is a bonus, even die-hard Apple fans are belittling the iPhone Pocket over their opinion that it is not any better than a jean pocket and looks ridiculous.

iJustine, a YouTuber who has based her content around Apple products since 2006,  posted a video mocking the iPhone sling by comparing the pocket to a jujitsu belt. On her TikTok page, she also noted that this new accessory seemed very similar to the iPod Sock, released in 2004. This makes it seem like Apple is losing its modern appeal and simply recycling old ideas.

When asked if she thinks Apple is moving in the wrong direction, sophomore Ella Bayer responded, “With the ugly [iPhone] 17, and now this, I think Apple, as a company, is running out of ideas. They are definitely going downhill.”

Another sophomore, Camilia Elkoustaf, said, “I think it’s over-consumption and an extremely unnecessary purchase. Like that’s why we have pockets and purses. I think a lot of people are only buying it because it’s an Apple product and if it were made by anyone else, they would not.” The students at SCHS, like most, fail to see the aesthetic and practical appeal of the iPhone Pocket.

Throughout 2025, Apple has failed to appeal to their target market. With people claiming the iPhone Pocket as Apple’s second failure, this release has many fans questioning when Apple will release a product that feels like authentic Apple again.
